The Scope For Reiki In Cancer Treatment

Cancer claims around 5,50,000 lives every year in India, with 800,000 new cases being diagnosed each year. While patient outcomes have improved drastically in recent years, quality of life issues do persist, as some conventional treatments like chemotherapy and radiotherapy have severe side effects. This makes alternative therapies like reiki particularly relevant in cancer care, but keep in mind that reiki is only meant to be used as a complimentary therapy. Especially in cases of life threatening conditions like cancer or heart disease, I advise my patients to continue conventional treatment and to use Reiki as a complimentary therapy that can facilitate the action of medical care and reduce symptoms or side effects.

Reiki is actually the perfect complimentary therapy, as studies over the decades have found it to be completely safe, even in cases where researchers did not found any health benefits. On the other hand some studies have found that Reiki can help cancer patients by providing pain relief, improving quality of sleep, and reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Reiki Health Benefits For Cancer

Reiki is an eastern medicine system in which a practitioner channels energy to enhance the affected person’s own immune or healing response. The discipline is based on the belief in an energy or lifeforce that supports our inherent healing abilities.

Stress Reduction

The primary function of purpose for Reiki in cancer treatment can be attributed to its potential as a stress reduction and relaxation technique. There has been considerable anecdotal evidence about its healing properties and a few studies have found that Reiki may enhance healing, while promoting other health benefits. Some of these benefits are attributed to stress reduction with Reiki.

Pain Relief

For many cancer patients, the pain from treatment is even harder to endure than the condition itself, making complimentary therapies for pain relief and side effect reduction most popular. Reiki is notable for its ability to reduce such pain and it is also believed to reduce the severity of other symptoms and side effects like weakness and nausea. Reduction in these feelings of discomfort also improves patient moods and adherence to doctor recommendations.

Reiki is non-invasive and does not involve the use of any drugs, foods, or other pharmaceutical products, which is why almost every study, no matter the findings, has found Reiki to be safe for cancer patients. It poses no risk of side effects or complications, but can help patients right from the time of diagnosis. Reiki can also help with recovery and rehabilitation, as it helps stabilize moods, improving patient outlooks after they have completed cancer treatments.

While I firmly believe that Reiki has tremendous potential to improve your health and wellbeing, the evidence for Reiki as a sole therapy is lacking and I would advise patients to only incorporate Reiki as part of a comprehensive treatment plan, wherein it supports conventional care.
