The Effectiveness Of Green Tea For Weight Loss

“Polypehenols in green tea enhance body metabolism and have a restrictive effect on appetite and fat absorption, which can aid weight loss”

If you were to go by every bit of information you stumbled upon online, you’d think that green tea is a magical solution that could solve every human affliction, but not all of the information is from deceptive marketing or overzealous fitness junkies. There has been a lot of research into the health benefits of green tea and many of these benefits are attributed to the high concentration of catechin polyphenols in the tea. How does this help with weight loss?

These polypehenols enhance body metabolism and have a restrictive effect on appetite and fat absorption, as body energy is utilized more efficiently and glucose & insulin levels are better regulated. In terms of burning fat, green tea mainly helps with reducing visceral fat (layers of fat around internal organs) that is associated with a number of lifestyle diseases like diabetes & heart disease.

Limitations Of Green Tea For Weight Loss

“Some studies have found no change in the rate of fat loss from drinking green tea, but it helps indirectly because of its impact on other factors that can promote weight loss”

While these factors do promote some amount of weight loss, they are not adequate for burning enough fat to produce visible results and many researchers have found no significant change in the rate of fat loss from drinking green tea. This is because reduction in visceral fat does not produce results that are as visible as those from loss of subcutaneous fat (visible fat beneath the skin surface).

Green tea for weight loss is helpful instead because of its impact on other factors that can promote weight loss. Increasing your intake of healthy herbal teas like green tea can reduce your craving for high sugar drinks like sodas, cola, and packaged fruit juices that can increase your caloric intake.

This means that drinking green tea for weight loss will only have a limited effect on weight reduction through fat burn, but it can make it easier to incorporate other lifestyle changes that promote weight loss. To reach your weight loss goals, you need to combine green tea intake with other techniques for weight loss, most notably exercising and eating healthy.
