Natural Ayurvedic Home Remedies For High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure, clinically described as hypertension is one of the most common problems today, even affecting younger adults. It is estimated that the condition affects one in three Indians and is directly responsible for more than half of all stroke deaths and a quarter of all coronary heart disease deaths in India. If neglected, high blood pressure can be a cause for heart attacks, strokes, aneurysm, heart failure, kidney failure, and vision loss. However, high blood pressure can be effectively controlled with treatment or with the help of Ayurvedic home remedies.

Here are some of the most effective home remedies for high blood pressure that could help reduce your reliance on medications.

Ayurvedic Home Remedies for High Blood Pressure

1. Fenugreek Seeds

With their high potassium and dietary fiber content, fenugreek (methi) seeds can help to regulate and lower the high blood pressure. Some studies have supported claims that the seeds may be useful in the treatment of hypertension because of a possible modulating effect on an enzyme related to the condition.

How To Consume

  • Boil two teaspoons of fenugreek seeds in water for about two – three minutes and then strain it.

  • Put the seeds in a blender and make a paste.

  • Consume this paste twice a day; once in the morning on an empty stomach and once in the evening. Repeat this remedy for at least three months for best results. Do it with caution if you have excess heat in the body.

2. Coconut Water

Coconut water is a good source of potassium, magnesium and vitamin C, which is why consuming the fluid, helps to lower systolic blood pressure. For best results, try to drink coconut water at least thrice a day.

3. Watermelon Seeds

Several studies, including one published in the American Journal of Hypertension found that the intake of watermelon helped improve aortic blood pressure and other vascular parameters. This effect may be because of a compound called cucurbocitrin in watermelon seeds, which helps to widen the blood capillaries. This basically has a vasodilator effect, providing natural relief from hypertension.

How To Consume

  • Take the equal quantities of dried watermelon seeds and poppy seeds (khus khus). Grind them and take one teaspoon of this mixture in the morning on an empty stomach, and in the evening as well.

  • Alternatively, one can add two teaspoons of crushed dried watermelon seeds into a cup of boiled water. Let it steep for about an hour and then strain it.  Consume four – five tablespoons of this water throughout the day at regular intervals.

4. Lemons

Lemons are widely regarded as an effective home remedy for high blood pressure because of purported effect of reducing rigidity of the blood vessels. A study published in 2015 found that the anti-hypertensive effect of lemon may be attributed to auraptene, a compound present in most citric fruits. The high vitamin C content gives you added heart health benefits, as the natural antioxidant, helping reduce the harmful effects of free radicals.

How To Consume

  • Drink a cup of warm water along with freshly squeezed lemon juice each morning on an empty stomach.

  • Note – For best results, do not add salt or sugar.

5. Banana

Banana is also an effective home remedy to control high blood pressure, primarily because of its high potassium content. A study by Indian researchers published in the journal Current Science found that natural compounds in bananas have a similar effect to anti-hypertensive, without any of the side effects. You can simply eat one or two bananas each day, as part of your regular diet.

6. Garlic

Several studies have demonstrated a blood pressure lowering effect from garlic, as it produces nitric oxide and hydrogen sulfide, which helps in the relaxation of blood vessels. Both the raw and cooked forms of garlic are quite effective to control high blood pressure.

How to consume

  • You can eat one or two crushed garlic cloves daily or you can add crushed garlic to a cup of milk if you find raw garlic to be unpalatable.

  • Alternatively, you can add five or six drops of garlic juice to four teaspoons of water and drink it twice a day.

7. Onion Juice

Onions have long been regarded as an effective natural remedy for high blood pressure because they are packed with the antioxidant flavonol called quercetin, which helps to decrease the high blood pressure levels.

How To Consume

  • One can eat a medium-sized, raw onion every day.

  • You can also mix half a teaspoon of onion juice and honey – consume it twice a day for one to two weeks.

8. Honey

Honey has traditionally been used in folk medicine to lower blood pressure naturally, and these claims were supported by a study published in Letters in Drug Design & Discovery. Researchers have also found that honey may help lower systolic blood pressure.

How To Consume

  • Consume two teaspoons of honey on an empty stomach each morning.

  • You can also mix a teaspoon of honey and ginger juice along with two teaspoons of cumin seed powder and consume the concoction twice a day.

  • Another option is to mix honey and basil juice in equal amounts. Consume it on an empty stomach each day.

While these Ayurvedic remedies for high blood pressure can help to treat the problem effectively, they are not meant to be used as an alternative to medical care. They may reduce dependence on antihypertensive medications though and your doctor could lower dosages or stop medications, depending on how you respond to the natural treatment. This is another reason why it’s important to continue going for regular health checkups if you suffer from hypertension.
